Thank you to Think City for having our Executive Director Tan E Hun on their Public Housing Liveability Conference!
On the panel session “Rights to the City – Advocating for Greater Public Housing Liveability”, E Hun shared her perspective on the need of cross-ministerial and cross-disciplinary coordination to enhance the current state of public housing; the need to reform our house ownership model to avoid the prevalence of housing debt; as well as how the government, both of state and federal levels, plays a crucial role in determining the direction of our housing models.
Other than that, there was also a lot of insights to be gained on capacity building and empowerment for public housing residents, who are often of our country’s low income and marginalised demographics; considerations towards the accessibility of public housing and ensuring the quality of life for its residents through public facilities; statistics and reflections on public housing purchases and ownership in comparison to private housing; experiences directly from our Program Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) community members; as well as efforts needed in reforming and utilising the current state of our public housing.
Overall, we would like to congratulate Think City for pulling off a very successful first conference on public housing in Malaysia, and to thank them once again for inviting us as a panelist!
