The emergency (darurat) and suspension of the parliament was supposed to be PM Muhyiddin Yassin’s solution to his political troubles and clear the way for him to tackle the pandemic. But has it been successful?
As speculation is rife on parliament reopening, REFSA Comms’ Director, Iskandar Fareez shared with CNA how Muhyiddin’s failure to manage the political deadlock among his partners have impaired the government’s ability to fully address the current health and economic crises of Malaysia.
Summary
Malaysia’s King is about to get involved with growing dissatisfaction with the way the government has handled the COVID-19 pandemic. King Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin is set to meet political leaders starting tomorrow (June 9). The planned meetings follow a series of appeals by MPs, students and rights activists, urging the King to lift the emergency proclamation that they claim did very little to contain the pandemic, but rather, preserved the political powers of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s government. The emergency proclamation is set to expire on Aug 1.
