REFSA’s main objectives are:

• to conduct research on social, economic and contemporary issues affecting Malaysians;
  
• to serve as a centre for intellectual interaction with the objective of advancing human and social development amongst all Malaysians.
  
• to articulate and disseminate information and help in the formulation of local, state and national policies.

REFSA aims to:

• identify and undertake research on social, economic and contemporary issues and policies of both academic and practical interests;
  
• provide advisory and research services to the general public on social, economic and contemporary issues;
  
• provide independent views and recommendations on issues of national, social, economic and contemporary policies;
  
• play an intermediary role in the public and private sectors and serve as a centre for research in social, economic and contemporary issues via cooperation and collaboration with other similar entities;
  
• organise and conduct workshops, symposia and conferences to promote discussion and policy formulation.
